The Bone Imaging Core, at the Center for Musculoskeletal Disease Research (CMDR), is supported by a COBRE award (NIGMS P20GM125503) and College of Medicine funds and operates as a centralized and Shared Resource facility to assist CMDR members and UAMS investigators with the musculoskeletal imaging needed for their research efforts. The core provides state-of-the-art imaging resources for quantitative characterization of tissue and cellular changes underlying the pathogenesis of the musculoskeletal disorders being studied.
Imaging modalities and instrumentation
The core offers users access to equipment and training to gather imaging data, including:
Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). The core houses two InaAlyzer2 DXA scanners that enable in vivo and ex vivo quantification of bone mineral density and body composition
X-ray. The Core houses a Faxitron ultraFocus that enables quick x-ray imaging of in vivo and ex vivo samples.
microcomputed tomography (microCT). The Core houses two vivaCT80 microCTs and two 45CT microCTs that enable quantification of bone mass and bone microarchitecture, determination of adiposity, and muscle cross-sectional area. The Core also houses three computer stations that enable remote access and analysis of microCT imaging data.
Bioluminescence and Optical fluorescence. The Core houses one IVIS Lumina XRMS, which enables the quantification of fluorescence and bioluminescence from live mice or excised tissues, as well as cell and organ cultures.
Bone Histomorphometry. The Core is equipped with two Zeiss AxioImager M2 Motorized Upright Microscopes, featuring motorized stages and integrated Olympus cameras, large monitors, and Osteometrics software systems. These systems enable the quantification of dynamic and static parameters using histological sections.
Training and Usage of Equipment. The Core provides training in imaging and data analysis. Trained users are given access to the different imaging equipment in the Core. The Core functions with a fee structure based on the number of scans or the time spent on each equipment. For full-service requests (i.e., the Core scans and analyzes the data), please contact the Core director.
